WHAT AN AMAZING NIGHT! In late September nearly one hundred of us—donors, scholars, and friends—came together at Carnegie Mellon University to celebrate the generosity that powers our mission. Thanks to you, twenty-seven brilliant scholars from CMU and Pitt are pursuing their research with confidence and creativity. Looking Back, Moving Forward Our featured speaker, Jim Garrett, CMU provost and chief academic officer, shared a wonderful story about how ARCS Pittsburgh began in 2002. A small group of visionaries—including Jim, John Anderson, Jerry Cohon, and a team of “mighty women”—believed in the power of investing in young scientists. That belief has grown into something extraordinary: 197 scholars supported and counting! Together, we’ve helped make Pittsburgh a true hub for innovation and discovery. Scholars Chris Choi, Will Ferguson, and Evelyn Allsup (Photo courtesy of CMU) Hearing from Our Scholars Two of our third-year scholars, Will Ferguson (CMU) and Katrina Carr (Pitt), spoke about their research and how ARCS support has made a real difference—not just in their work, but in their lives. Honoring a Legacy We also took time to remember and honor Jerry Cohon, CMU president emeritus, who hosted the very first ARCS Pittsburgh gathering. His leadership and friendship shaped our chapter in countless ways. In his honor, we’ve named a Pittsburgh Chapter Award after Jerry and his wife, Maureen. This year’s recipient, Evelyn Allsup (CMU), is doing fascinating work exploring the connections between core-collapse supernovae and binary black hole mergers. Incredible, right?
